Editorials > Dragon Ball casting begins...with who!?

Well, this confirms that Fox's upcoming adaptation of Dragon Ball is picking and choosing little things from each version of the manga/anime staple for the big screen. But this is bordering on insane.

The main cast has been confirmed at The Hollywood Reporter–we're still crossing our fingers for James Kyson Lee's Yamcha: Justin Chatwin, he of The Chumscrubber and The Invisible, will play Goku, the hapless martial artist who discovers he is an alien sent to destroy the Earth but wound up with amnesia and opts to protect his new home. The lead villain?

Why, none other than James Marsters, best known to thousands of screaming Buffy fangirls as "The Blonde Johnny Rotten Vampire." Or, Spike.  And who will he be?

Piccolo. The green-skinned alien who growls and can regenerate limbs, originally believed to be a demon in the first series. Here it seems he'll be part of the alien force, we assume, that is coming to finish Goku's job on Earth.

James Wong (Final Destination, The One) is confirmed as the director with Stephen Chow serving as a producer.

The plot is currently anyone's guess, as the alien invasion plot comes from Dragon Ball Z and Piccolo attempting to rule the world goes all the way back to the first Dragon Ball. More than that, how is James Marsters supposed to attact his in-built Buffydom fanbase if he's slathered in green bodypaint?  Anyway, we can assume that the dragon balls are used in some way. And yes, we can't wait to snicker at the teaser trailers advertising:

DRAGON BALL

GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL.

edit: Ah, also the worldwide release date has already been set for August 15, 2008. A paltry writer's strike cannot stop this film's power level. It's clearly over 9000.

don't agree with the cast at all, although a avid DBZ fan and DB fan i feel as though this film will flop with out the proper script, seeing as only the true fan base will go. ... unless they can pull a 360 and make new fans i still feel that this film is already in the crapper, by there choice for goku and picollo.

Vern Troyer for Krillan

usually i'm telling the editorials of this site to shut the hell up, because

a) nobody gaves a rats ass what you think.

and

b) 95% of the members on this site only use you for your movie trailers.

but CONGRATULATIONS!
this is the only editorial that doesn't sound like the crew who writes this doesn't completly have their heads up thir asses.
so congrats on your first bit that makes sense to everyone instead of just you.
cheers!

you can actually talk to the editorials? damn, i thought all we could do was write them.

@chad:
Troyer pulls triple duty: Krillan, Chao-zu and Pu'ar.
Sangai on 11/14/2007 6:44pm
vern troyer. ... come on even as a joke thats a poor one. i seriously don't wanna see big name actors, or actors that just can't act I.E the kid playin goku... and the dude spike from buffy WTF.. guy would be a terrible choice.

they will prolly just do camera effects like in LOTR's trilogy to make krillin appear smaller.
JPDyno on 11/14/2007 11:40pm
I dont think they're too bad a choice. The looks are right, James Marsters does have a piccollo-like stare.
dunno about the story though. Hope they dont screw with it too much. (Piccollo part of an alien force, coming to finish gokus job on earth? shouldnt that be vegita and the other saiyans?.... ok ill shut up now)
Sangai on 11/15/2007 11:34am
no your right about it being vegita . id prefer it be basically along the same line dragon ball was, picollo is thought to really be a demon, but the evil have of kame . hell bent on world domination he forces goku into a battle, piccolo kills krillin i belive, end of the film will be the summoning of the dragon to ressurect krillin.

i just don't think the choice for goku was a good one. that kid was terrible in war of the worlds.
