Film news sources make puns every chance they get, and "Prom Night," by its very existence, has allowed for quite a few. They're saying that "audiences make a date for 'Prom,'" that the remake "terrorized the competish," that it was "king," and that it "won the B.O. crown" (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter). So with those out of the way, it's true, "Prom Night" spiked "Street Kings'" punch and took advantage of it in the KFC parking lot. People are already spreading nasty rumors about "Street Kings" and Alissa doesn't want to be its friend anymore. "Street Kings" thinks Alissa is overreacting.
"Prom Night" earned $22.7 million this weekend. Box Office watchers attribute part of this to the film's PG-13 rating, which allowed younger horror fans to spend their allowance money more easily. "Street Kings," David Ayer's cop drama with Keanu Reeves and Forest Whitaker, made a mere $12 million and landed in second place. "Smart People" was the only other new release that found its way into the top ten. It opened in fewer theaters than "Prom" or "Street" but made a reasonable $4.2 million (seventh place).
I often look at Rottentomatoes' Box Office report, and I find that the most entertaining weeks are the ones in which the Box Office standings are inversely proportional to the Tomatometer.
