Acclaimed British actor Sir Ben Kingsley has signed on to appear in Martin Scorsese's 1954-set Shutter Island, based on a Dennis Lehane novel. The film is already set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo as U.S. Marshals sent to an island-based mental institution in New England to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Kingsley will play the hospital's chief physician.

Laeta Kalogridis wrote the screenplay.
