The critics have spoken, and it sounds like while "Get Smart" doesn't reinvent any wheels, "The Love Guru" is barely watchable tripe. A number of reviewers have gone so far to call it "the worst film of the year," but then critics can be a dramatic bunch when they want to be.
As we all know, the critics don't decide the box office, sometimes far from it. So which (if either) of these high profile comedies will strike gold this weekend? BoxOfficeMojo's Reader Poll for today (June 20) sheds a little more light on the situation. When asked "What is your top choice to see this weekend?" 41.4% of readers responded "Get Smart," while only 6.2% expressed an interest in "The Love Guru." That puts it in fifth place after (in order) "The Incredible Hulk," No interest, and "The Happening." BoxOfficeMojo also reveals that "Get Smart" is opening in nearly 900 more theaters than "Love Guru" (3911 to 3012).
So based on all of this information, my guess is that "Get Smart" will make $45 million, "Hulk" will make $28 million, "Love Guru" will make $24 million, and "The Happening" will drop down to $16 million. These are all domestic numbers, I think I'll stay away from international figures this weekend. I just can't guess how each of these films are tracking abroad. What do you think?
