Editorials > First Look: Jake Gyllenhaal as the Prince of Persia!

Jake Gyllenhaal shows off his new body for the upcoming movie Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.  In this movie Jake will be playing the young Persian prince, Dastan, in the sixth century.  He must work with the lively princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) to stop the Sands of Time from reaching the hands of evil.   After the prince was tricked by a dying Vizier to unleash the Sands of Time it begins to destroy a kingdom and transform its populace into ferocious demons. In his effort to save his own kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake, it's up to the prince and the princess to return the sands to the hourglass by using the Dagger of Time, which also gives him a limited control over the flow of time.

The synopsis of this movie plays along very closely to the video game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which can either be a really good thing or an absolutely terrible thing.  The video game was magnificent and it had a tremendous storyline to accompany it.  However can Jake Gyllenhaal live up to the expectation of so many Prince of Persia fans?  Will he be able to deliver a performance that the real Prince of Persia could not?

I was very skeptical at first and felt the movie sold out to another big name actor.  Having played all the Prince of Persia games myself, I did not picture the prince this buff.  The prince was a more acrobatic fighter than the fist pumping in your face style.  With no actual shots from the set it is hard to tell which direction they are taking the movie.  However, I hope that these pictures only show us that Gyllenhaal is completely immersed in the character and he can deliver us the performance we all want.  I’ll take these pictures with a grain of salt because they at least got the costume and look of the prince down.

It will certainly be an exciting movie to see and I am sure it will be a box office hit.

The movie is being directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and is scheduled for release May 28, 2010.

too bad his sister can't transform.

Ahh ha ha ha... worst casting ever. What a pathetic douche. Just because he was in a gay cowboy movie does not make him a great actor that can do any role. He and his sister are horrible. It reminds me of when Nicole Kidman played an old lady and everyone forgot she is a damn terrible actress. I don't care to research this film any more than this page, but I'm going to assume Uwe Boll is directing.

Actually I'd say both him and his sister are fairly decent at what they do. Pretty good even. I really liked Jake in Donnie Darko and Jarheads, and Maggie was a huge upgrade from Katie Holmes recently in The Dark Knight. So I guess I just find it a bit odd that you find them both horrible. Matter of fact your logic of "just because he was in a gay cowboy movie does not make him a great actor that can do any role" is..well...retarded. Do you really think this role above all the others he has played is going to push him the hardest as far as acting ability goes? I personally think he is more than capable of pulling off this role, and I imagine this will be a pretty entertaining flick. Oh, and I also personally think you're a tool.

Also, since you don't plan to research this film any further than this page, I'll tell you the film is being directed by Mike Newell who directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Donnie Brasco among other things. Then again, if you had actually bothered reading what was posted on this page you'd know that. So the fact alone that Uwe Boll isn't near this project gives me hope for it.

eh, I wouldn't kick her out of bad for eating crackers. Right Crackers? HA! Get it! Eh? Anyone? Crackers is what I'm calling my penis. I guess that joke works better in person.

I agree with King Kracka, Jake will most likely be good in this role. His past sure shows that he's a competent actor. Considering Hollywood finds it nearly impossible to cast someone of the appropriate nationality for the role (which makes sense, financially speaking), he's a good visual replacement because he kind of looks like the damn character. Now it's up to the director and crew to churn out a good flick. Still, even if they cut a cinematic turd it would be much better than a Boll movie.
