The next classic horror film on the remake chopping block will be Brian De Palma's 1978 thriller "The Fury." The original film starred Kirk Douglas as a former government agent who must save his psychically-powered son from an evil former colleague (the late John Cassavetes). Amy Irving ("Carrie") co-starred as another psychically-advanced person who helps Douglas.
Now, Fox has tapped Brian McGreevy and Lee Shipman to write a contemporary adaptation. From the sound of Variety's article, it seems like the Kirk Douglas character is being more or less eliminated. Instead the film "will center on a young man with heightened kinetic powers who is abducted by the government in order to take advantage of his special gifts."
You know what this is sounding more like? "Jumper." That said, these two new writers have something of a good reputation thanks to an spec script they wrote called "Of Every Wickedness." "Wickedness" made the so-called "Black List" of the hottest unproduced spec scripts in Hollywood. So maybe they've earned the benefit of the doubt.
Ted Field will be producing "The Fury," but no director has been announced yet.
