Shekhar Kapur, director of Elizabeth and its less-successful sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age, is set to fill in for the late Anthony Minghella on the anthology film New York, I Love You. According to THR, Minghella had written a script but had not cast or shot his segment. Minghella died suddenly last week after developing a brain hemorrhage during neck surgery. It's surprising that considering the unexpected nature of Minghella's demise, he personally asked Kapur to take over for him.
According to Kapur, Minghella asked the director to carry out his work shortly before the English Patient director went in for surgery two weeks ago. "He told me his film was about the value of life and how people sometimes just throw away their lives, unable to look beyond into the real beauty of it," Kapur wrote on his blog. "I will direct the film now – with Anthony in my heart and in presence of his soul."
Maybe Mighella's death wasn't as sudden as we'd been led to believe? When more information becomes available about the Gotham-set feature, we'll let you know.
