Michael Jai White, still best known for his eponymous role in the oft-dismissed "Spawn," may not be the biggest star in "The Dark Knight," he may not even quite make the top ten, but he still has things to say about it if you ask! And ask BlackFilm did.
White provided some details regarding his character, a crime lord named Gamble who attempts to fill the void left by Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) after "Batman Begins." He also speaks highly of his director and castmates, especially the deceased Heath Ledger, who would come to the set in full Joker make-up, even when he wouldn't appear on camera just to help the other actors play off of him. White also reveals that the now-famous quote "Why So Serious?" has to do with the Joker's father, who would say the same thing to him as a boy.
On the potential for "Spawn" being rebooted:
‘Spawn’ was before its time. It was an edgier type of film and we always battled with going all the way there. I always felt, as well as Todd McFarlane, that Spawn should have been rated R. If we do another one, it certainly will be.
I’ve always been involved in conversations about it and people like Todd saying that we can do it again. To me, it makes too much sense. To do a Spawn film with an R rating and be this totally edgy superhero, we’ve seen how to do it right. People have taken the Spawn mode and look, you have ‘Hellboy’ now in theaters. It’s pretty much a very similar tone.
My favorite quote of the interview has to be White's response to the question "Why should anyone see 'The Dark Knight'?"
MJK: Well, if they didn’t see the first movie, then they are probably not fans of good movies and good action movies.
Ouch! Consider yourselves disenfranchised, you tasteless shlubs who missed "Batman Begins!" Michael Jai White has no time for you.
"The Dark Knight" opens in just twenty days.
