News > New Line gets burned by Rings lawsuit

Written by John Lichman

The latest round in New Line vs. Peter Jackson goes to the man from down under, as a U.S. Magistrate has fined New Line $125,000 for not providing documents particular to the case.

Variety reports that New Line has yet to bring forward accounting documents to explain whether or not Jackson has been denied profits from The Lord of the Rings franchise. A rep for New Line has no comment. The courts demand that New Line has three weeks to produce the documents.

I'm all on Jacksons side in this. A contract is a contract and when NewLine promises to give him a set share of the merchandising revenue, then they can't later say "This should about do, you got enough anyway'".
It's not as if they themselves wouldn't fight for the last penny they have to get.
Not bringing forth the requested documents to check if they cheated, of course supports the impression that something isn't kosher about this.
