News > Plan B Picks Up Some Drug Memoirs

Paramount Pictures and Brad Pitt's Plan B company have acquired the screen rights to a pair of drug addiction-themed memoirs, one written by David Sheff and the other by his son Nic Sheff. The older Sheff wrote "Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction," while Nic penned "Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines." Both were published in February and quickly became bestsellers. "Beautiful Boy" is sold at Starbucks nationwide as part of the Starbucks Select book series, which has led to Starbucks being an investor in the coming feature film.

According to Variety, the "studio and producer will use the recently published books to frame a movie about drug addiction from the perspective of a young meth addict and the father who finds himself helpless to stop his son's downward spiral." At one point, Plan B had been planning to make a film out of James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces" but halted pre-production when Frey's exaggerations and fabrications came to light. Though Variety also mentions that Plan B may make the film anyway with Warner Independent Pictures.
