Summit Entertainment has bought a script called "Arena" from Toby Wagstaff (the narration writer of the Uganda-set hip hop documentary "Diamonds in the Rough") and Darren Howell (whose credits have been limited so far to "special thanks" on the "Natural Born Killers" making-of featurette). Rather than being a feature-length adaptation of a classic "Star Trek" episode, the premise of this film in Variety's words, "centers on a group of modern-day soldiers who are mysteriously transported from the thick of battle to a terrain-shifting landscape where they must fight the best warriors of all different eras and histories in a gladiatorial fight to the death – or be killed by the all-powerful operators of the 'Arena.'"
I wonder what they mean by "different eras and histories." So far there's no talent attached to it and no director has stepped up to helm the preposterous thing. Stranger films have been made, but somehow I don't see this one getting off the ground.
