Editorials > Ten of the Kookiest, Most Ludicrous Comedies of All Time

Since the dawn of time, man has loved to laugh…

Even in the early days of mankind, laughter was a necessity to deal with the hardships of hunting and gathering food. To celebrate this inherent need, we give you ten of the silliest, most hilarious, belly-laugh inducing comedies of all time.

Kentucky Fried Movie

The Kentucky Fried Movie was the first of the Abrahams/Zucker collaborations and still one of the funniest. Inall films that would follow, there would be a common thread tying all of the movies together. Kentucky Fried Movie was simply a series of self contained skits. One of the best has to be "A Fistful of Yen", parodying Enter the Dragon.

Airplane!

The next Abrahams/Zucker pairing was Airplane! An ex-pilot must save a doomed airliner when the crew falls ill. Complicating matters is his ex-fiance, who is a flight attendant aboard the flight. Together they must deal with both their relationship and the desperate plight of the ill crew and passengers. Sight gags and witty banter abound in this classic parody of disaster movies from 1980. A personal favorite of this movie for me is Barbara Billingsly (Leave It to Beaver's Mom) stating she "speaks jive..."

Naked Gun

You know this is going to be a twisted movie from the opening credits alone. Still one of the best movies Leslie Nielson was ever in, The Naked Gun is the movie version of a television show from the late '70's called Police Squad Plus, it has OJ Simpson in it...while he was still considered to be a nice guy. The Trailer says it all...

Amazon Women on the Moon

Finally, one that isn't from Abrahams/Zucker... Directed by Joe Dante and Carl Gottlieb, Amazon Women on the Moon paid homage to late night channel surfing, centered around a spoof of a 1950's science fiction movie (hence the title). Especially funny is the fact that the movie stars a TON of people you'd recognize. Besides the faux commercials and the numerous sketches, the "movie" portion of the movie is missing more than half of its essential plot, so we typically rejoin after something ridiculous and/or unexplainable has just happened. One of the best skits is "Son of the Invisible Man"... (slightly NSFW: Bare ass)

Hollywood Shuffle

From Robert Townsend comes the story of an aspiring actor, searching for his big break. It's a hilarious send up of everything movies, from acting school to film reviews... and everything in between. This movie's more of a cult classic, but is one of the funniest sketch movies ever. Check out the "At the Movies" parody, "Sneaking in the Movies"...(NSFW Language)

The History of the World, Part 1

One of my all time favorite movies, Mel Brooks' The History of the World, Part 1 is the history lesson we never had...but wish we did. Starting at the dawn of time and spanning through the French Revolution, we learn some of the backstories of famous historical events the way only Mel Brooks could tell it.

Monty Python & The Holy Grail

Unless you were born after 1995, you know about Monty Python & The Holy Grail... and the silliness contained therein. There are FAR too many quotable scenes in this movie, but all of them will have you laughing your ass off. Every scene is classic, from the infamous Black Knight to the Killer Bunny...so to do something a little different, I'll post this:

Another Mel Brooks classic, and another personal favorite... Spaceballs is Mel Brooks' send up of Star Wars, complete with miniaturized Darth Vader, a Winnebago for the Millenium Falcon, a "Druish" Princess, and a Mawg ("...half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend!") in for Chewbacca. Too many great scenes abound in this movie as well, but the single greatest line in the movie has to be this one:

Hot Shots

And we're back to Abrahams again! This time we find ourselves in a parody of Top Gun, with Charlie Sheen as the ace pilot who's lost confidence in his abilities and in conflict with another ace pilot, played by Cary Elwes, all while fighting an evil weapons manufacturer who wants to sabotage the mission so the current fighter jet design will be scrapped for the new model. The film lampoons everything from top action movies to the Energizer bunny... including this 9 1/2 Weeks inspired love scene...

The Onion Movie

Fans of the Onion newspaper already know what they're in for... The Onion Movie is a hilarious send up of the news. The sketches are loosely strung together by the story of a news anchor who only wants to report the news, but the corporation that owns the network wants to push its own agenda. Watch for a hilarious cameo by Steven Seagal!

Great list. Great flicks, one and all.

good list overall, but I'd say take off the Onion movie and put Blazing Saddles in its place

While we're nitpicking, I'd change Holy Grail to Life of Brian.

And there is a little Monty Python compilation of skits called "and now for something completely different" that I do love oh so much.
The Hitman on 08/06 2:20pm
Life of Brian is great too, undoubtedly...and Blazing Saddles would've been overkill with all of the Mel Brooks already on there. If anything, maybe drop Spaceballs and replace with Blazing Saddles.
