Editorials > The Replacements (A Look Back...)
It recently dawned on me that I may have to endure the grim reality of a fall and winter void of my two favorite sports - football and basketball. Both leagues face the possibility of a locked out season if labor agreement aren’t reached and I may have to become a hockey convert by this time next year to fill my sports fix. I also wondered if NFL Betting or NBA Betting websites would take wagers on either - or both - and what the odds would be.
I tried to fall asleep after the thought presented itself but was just too horrified and stayed up watching movies instead. I went with an old standby in The Matrix and immediately thought of the movie Neo did following the classic sci-fi masterpiece - The Replacements. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this movie. Between Shane Falco and Johnny Utah(Point Break), Keanu could have the best set of washed-up athlete names in film ever. In addition to Keanu, the film has a great ensemble cast which includes Gene Hackman, Orlando Jones, Jon Favreau, Rhys Ifans, and Jack Warden. All the supporting characters have their funny moments and despite the movie’s typically predictable story - the humor still manages to be quirky, screwball, and offbeat. The most fun comes during the ridiculous in-game situations the players manage to get themselves into. If only real life were like movies, then the possibility of locked out football and basketball seasons wouldn’t seem so bad. One thing’s for sure though: if there is a locked out season in either sport - and scabs are hired to replace the normal players - you can bet they’ll be a reality show involved. At which point, it just may become as entertaining as The Replacements was though. Check the movie out if you haven’t yet. It’s definetely worth the investment.
