Editorials > Today's Filmwad Rant: Where The Hell Are All The October Horror Flicks?

Over the past two years, as summer drew to a close, the movie megaplexes were flooded with "seasonal" fare. Now September and October (and September especially) aren't known for their quality films, the two months are known to be consistent. You know you're gonna get the tail end of the big summer comedy and action flicks (ones that didn't test as well), you know you're gonna get a trickle of the Oscar-bait to come and USUALLY you know you're gonna get some horror flicks.

Well, this year, we've had our layover films from summer ("Kingdom" anyone?), we've had our Oscar bait ("Eastern Promises")…but where the hell are the horror films?

On the list of releases until November 2nd, the only horror film coming out is "Saw IV." Compare that to 2006…in the months of September and October, we saw the release of "The Covenant," "The Wicker Man," "Feast," "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning," "The Grudge 2," and "Saw III."  That's 1 to 6.

What the hell happened to all the shlocky horror films that come out during the fall? Did "Grindhouse's" poor performance not only screw up the Weinstein Company but also the future of horror films as we know it? Did "Hostel Part 2" serve as the final nail in the coffin?

Who knows (well, I'm sure the studios know). But no matter the reason, I'm sorely missing some horror films NOT called Saw on the release schedule. How am I supposed to torture my kids if I can't take them to grossly inappropriate horror films?  Ehh?

I am still amazed that the powers that be could not postpone the release of Zombie's "Halloween" reboot until Halloween the holiday. Seems like an obvious choice to me, but noooo. That's why we can't have nice things.

No shit. Why didn't it fuckin' come out on Halloween.

It didn't come out on Halloween because it didn't want to compete with Saw IV which will be released this Halloween season abd will (unfortunately) without fail, snag a good share of profit despite being utter garbage.

Wouldn't 30 Days of Night be considered horror? That's coming out October 19.

Yeh, there are a few I missed, but the total is down by quite a bit.

Yes, it is quite light this fall. Looking forward to 30 Days, though!
