Editorials > Universal Signs Six-Year Feature Deal with Hasbro

Earlier today, in a move that would turn Rich Uncle Pennybags as green as his $20 bills, Universal Pictures announced a six-year partnership with Hasbro that will produce at least four feature films based on the toy and game publisher's branded properties.

The properties up for development include "Battleship", "Candy Land", "Clue", "Magic, The Gathering", "Monopoly", and "Stretch Armstrong".

This deal gives Universal exclusive access to all of Hasbro's properties except those already held by their long-time rival, Paramount Pictures: the successful "Transformers" and likely blockbuster "G.I. Joe" franchises.

Says Universal chairman Marc Shmuger on the partnership:

“This deal gives Universal access to some of the greatest brands in the world. Hasbro’s portfolio of products has tremendous emotional resonance with children and adults. They offer an exciting opportunity for us to develop tentpole movies with built-in global brand awareness, which is a key component of our slate strategy.”

Over the years, many of the Hasbro branded properties have seen various levels of development. A "Monopoly" feature from Ridley Scott and Scott Free Productions is currently on the fast-track.

Who wants to be the Top Hat?  Universal.

A remake of the under-rated comedy "Clue" is just about the only possible positive to take out of this. Either that or an action movie complete with all-Nerf weapon props.

A remake of Clue would probably just suck.
